In this talk we investigate finiteness properties of the space of arcs of an algebraic variety. We introduce the embedding codimension as formal-local invariant of the singularities of an arbitrary scheme. We then prove a characterization of nondegenerate arcs in terms of the finiteness of their embedding codimension. In particular, this gives a strong converse to the Grinberg-Kazhdan-Drinfeld theorem.
